How does heat and steam make wood handle water?

The wood is heated to approximately 380°F in an oxygen-free kiln, removing the organic material that causes excessive movement.

No organic material = no cupping, warping, gapping, or splintering.

Steam then cools and stabilizes the wood, permanently locking in the change.

Can I use wide plank flooring like White Oak?
Yes. That’s one of the biggest advantages. We offer true wide planks — 7″–11″ widths with lengths up to 14′–16′.

 

Does it install differently?

No. It installs like real wood — because it is real wood. It sands, stains, and finishes the same.

 

Is Thermawood made with chemicals or plastic layers?
No. Thermawood is changed using heat and steam only. There is no plastic wear layer, engineered core, or chemical treatment used to make the wood waterproof.

Does waterproof hardwood still scratch or dent?
Yes. It is still real wood. Dogs, furniture, grit, high heels, and everyday life can scratch or dent it. Waterproof means water will not ruin the wood. It does not mean the floor is indestructible.

Is Thermawood better than LVP or engineered flooring?
It depends on the project. LVP and engineered flooring can make sense in many homes. Thermawood is for people who want real 3/4-inch solid hardwood in places traditional solid wood normally cannot go.

More Questions About Thermawood, Radiant Heat, and Concrete Slabs

Can solid hardwood go over radiant heat?
Most traditional solid hardwood is not recommended over radiant heat because normal wood expands, contracts, gaps, cups, or cracks with heat and humidity changes. Thermawood is different. It is 100% solid hardwood changed with heat and steam so it does not react like traditional hardwood.

Does Thermawood need to be glued down over radiant heat?
Yes. For radiant heat, Thermawood should be installed using a full glue-down method. A full-spread urethane adhesive keeps the flooring tight to the substrate, improves contact with the heat system, and helps the floor perform the way it should.

Why not nail down Thermawood over radiant heat?
Radiant heat and wide plank solid hardwood need stability and full contact with the floor below. A glue-down installation avoids the problems that can come with nail-down methods, including splitting, loose boards, hollow spots, and movement.

Is Thermawood brittle because it is thermally modified?
Thermawood is installed differently than ordinary nail-down hardwood. Because it is glued down, brittleness is not the same concern it would be with blind nailing or stapling. The floor is bonded to the substrate instead of relying on nails through the tongue.

Can wide plank Thermawood go over radiant heat?
Yes. Thermawood can be used in 7", 9", and 11" wide planks over radiant heat when installed correctly. That is one of the main advantages over traditional solid hardwood.

Is Thermawood engineered flooring?
No. Thermawood is real 3/4-inch solid hardwood from top to bottom. It is not engineered flooring, LVP, laminate, or a wood-look product.

Can Thermawood go over slab-on-grade concrete?
Yes. Thermawood is built for slab-on-grade projects when installed correctly. Unlike traditional solid hardwood, Thermawood is changed with heat and steam so it does not react to moisture and movement the same way normal wood does.
